Screening-Level Risk Assessment

Detail

Screening-Level Risk Assessment of Reserve Basin Sediments, Philadelphia Naval Complex, Pennsylvania, Northern Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Lester, PA.

Point of Contact:

David Barclift - Northern Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Lester, PA.

Summary:

A screening-level ecological risk assessment was conducted for the sediments in the Reserve Basin at the Philadelphia Naval Complex. The assessment evaluated potential risks to benthic invertebrates, fish and birds that may be exposed to sediments in the basin. Contaminants of potential concern included PAHs, PCBs, pesticides and metals. The screening-level risks were estimated as described in Tier 1 of the CNO Policy for conducting ERAs. Contaminants of potential concern retained by the Tier 1 screen were then further evaluated following Tier 2 Step 3a. Unacceptable risks were identified for a variety of contaminants (metals, PAHs, and PCBs) and receptors (benthic invertebrates, fish, and birds), and the assessment identified the need for the site to begin Step 3b, Problem Formulation, of the Tier 2 BERA.
