About the Northeast Reliability Interconnect EIS
The Northeast Reliability Interconnect EIS addresses potential impacts associated with the construction, connection, operation, and maintenance of Bangor Hydro-Electric Company's proposed transmission line between the U.S. and Canada, including potential impacts associated with a modification of the previously authorized transmission line route and other alternative routes.
Bangor Hydro-Electric Company (BHE) has applied to DOE to amend Presidential Permit PP–89, which authorizes BHE to construct a single-circuit 345,000-volt (345-kV) electric transmission line across the U.S. international border in the vicinity of Baileyville, Maine. DOE has determined that amendment of the Presidential permit would constitute a major Federal action that may have a significant impact upon the environment pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA). For this reason, DOE prepared an environmental impact statement (EIS) entitled, "Environmental Impact Statement for the Bangor Hydro-Electric Company Northeast Reliability Interconnect," or the Northeast Reliability Interconnect EIS" for short. The EIS addresses potential environmental impacts from the proposed action and the range of reasonable alternatives. The EIS was prepared by DOE, with assistance from Argonne National Laboratory.
For more information about the contents and scope of the EIS, see What's in the EIS.
