J-Field: Postburn Survey

PHOTOGRAPHIC AND GLOBAL POSITION SURVEY OF J-FIELD AFTER A CONTROLLED BURNING OPERATION

A controlled burn of J-Field was performed in April 2000. The eastern 2/3s of the Gunpowder Neck was affected from the Robins Point Tower access road to the Chesapeake Bay (Figure 1). Aerial photographs of the area were taken on April 24, 2000. Photographs of the areas adjacent to the Former Burn Pits exposed as a result of the burn were taken on April 11, 2000. A Global Position Survey of affected areas adjacent to the Former Burn Pits was conducted on April 20 and April 26, 2000. The aerial photographs were registered to a Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system, zone 18 north with a datum of WGS 1984. The controlled burn exposed two pushout areas referred to as Pushout area-north and Pushout area-south (Figure 2) Within the two pushout areas a number of fairly well defined mounds could be identified. The locations of Mounds 1 to 7 are depicted in Figure 3. The locations of Mounds 8 to 15 are depicted in Figure 4. Close-up photographs of the area exposed as a result of the burn are depicted in Figures 5 through 21.
