MARSSIM for Managers Training

A one-day MARSSIM overview workshop for project and program managers responsible for remediation of radiologically contaminated sites.

Argonne’s MARSSIM for Managers workshop can range from four to eight hours, depending on the background of the participants and the level of detail desired. The class is designed to give project and program managers responsible for remediation of radiologically contaminated sites an overview of the MARSSIM approach to site cleanup confirmation. Attendees will receive instruction on issues related to planning, conducting, evaluating, and documenting both soil and building final status surveys necessary to demonstrate compliance with dose or risk-based regulations. Attendees will receive a workbook notebook with references and a copy of the MARSSIM manual.

The class focuses on providing managers with an understanding of how the use of MARSSIM affects critical project components such as:

  • Linking closure protocol to construction (e.g., excavation, and remedial action) activities;
  • Incorporating MARSSIM guidance into Records of Decision and other environmental documents;
  • Addressing key regulatory issues related to MARSSIM, including closure protocol for nonradiological contaminants; and
  • Optimal use of existing site facilities, instrumentation, and personnel to implement MARSSIM.

Other topics can include:

  • The general MARSSIM process,
  • Key MARSSIM concepts and components,
  • How MARSSIM fits into the broader CERCLA and RCRA regulatory environment,
  • Implications of MARSSIM for program management and execution,
  • The role of statistics in MARSSIM decision making,
  • Cost and time implications of sampling design and instrumentation selection,
  • Quality control and quality assurance,
  • Interpretation of final status survey results,
  • Common MARSSIM pitfalls and how to avoid them, and
  • Questions and answers.
