Management Responsibilities

DOE has responsibility for safe and efficient management of approximately 704,000 metric tons of depleted UF6.

The Uranium Program's activities are the responsibility of DOE's Office of Environmental Management (EM).

All the activities related to this program will be managed by the Oak Ridge Office (EM-32), within the Office of Site Closure (EM-30).

The Depleted UF6 Management Program involves three primary activities:

  • Cylinder surveillance and maintenance
  • Conversion of depleted UF6 to a more stable chemical form for use or disposal, and
  • Development of beneficial uses of depleted uranium
